Hello, and welcome to the Yarn ChickHen blog! π§Άπ
If you have found us through YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, a search for crochet help, or by accidentally wandering into a corner of the internet full of yarn, Scottish words and mild chaos⦠you are very welcome here.
Yarn ChickHen is our cosy little corner for knitting, crochet, crafts, beginner makes, finished objects, patterns, yarny experiments, Scottish words and plenty of banter.
At the centre of it all are Mrs T and Mr T β one experienced maker and one very genuine beginner.
So⦠who are Mrs T and Mr T?
Mrs T is the maker of the pair. She has been knitting since childhood and taught herself to crochet long before online tutorials were everywhere. She is the one most likely to have several projects on the go at once, tweak a pattern halfway through, decide it needs βjust one little changeβ, and somehow end up making something completely her own.
She is also the person you will usually find teaching, demonstrating, sharing finished projects and trying to keep the rest of Yarn ChickHen vaguely organised.
Mr T, meanwhile, is Scottish, usually behind the camera, and very much still learning.
He began with loom knitting and has since ventured into crochet, which means Yarn ChickHen does not have to pretend to know what it feels like to be a complete beginner β we have one right here.
That is where Absolute Beginners Corner comes in.
Beginners really do belong here
One thing we want Yarn ChickHen to be is a place where nobody feels silly for not knowing something.
If you have never held a crochet hook before, do not know the difference between UK and US crochet terms, cannot get your tension right, have made a granny square that looks more like modern art, or have simply stared at a pattern and thought βWhat on earth does that mean?β β you are exactly the sort of person Absolute Beginners Corner is for.
Mrs T teaches. Mr T tries it. Sometimes it works first time.
Sometimes it very much does not. π
Either way, we show the process.
Small wins count here. A first chain counts. A wonky square counts. Finally understanding a stitch that made no sense yesterday absolutely counts.
Why is it called Yarn ChickHen?
The name is a mixture of America, Scotland and one of those little yarn jokes that makers immediately understand.
Mrs T is American β the Chick.
Mr T is Scottish β the Hen.
Yes, Mr T is technically the hen.
He has accepted this with great dignity. Mostly.
And then there is yarn chicken: that dangerous game where you are racing towards the end of a project while watching the remaining yarn get shorter and shorter.
Will the project finish first?
Will the yarn run out first?
Will somebody have to pretend that missing final row was a deliberate design decision?
This is the sort of important drama we deal with around here.
A wee bit of Scotland too
Yarn ChickHen is not only about stitches.
Mr T also brings a Scottish Word of the Day to the channel, which means visitors may occasionally leave knowing both how to crochet something and a Scottish word they had never heard before.
You can find those over in our Scottish Word of the Day section.
There will also be bits of Scotland, days out, yarn events, travel, behind-the-scenes moments and whatever else happens to become part of the Yarn ChickHen story.
What will be on this blog?
This blog gives us somewhere to go a little deeper than we sometimes can in a video or social post.
You can expect things such as:
- beginner-friendly crochet and knitting help;
- notes and extra information to go alongside our YouTube videos;
- patterns, techniques and useful yarny tips;
- finished objects and the stories behind them;
- Mrs T’s projects, experiments and occasional pattern rebellion;
- Mr T’s beginner progress β including the mistakes;
- yarn events, trips and crafty days out;
- Scottish words and a wee bit of Scottish life;
- and anything else the Flock might enjoy.
Our Finished Objects section will gradually fill up with the things we make, while the Patterns area will become home to patterns, tutorials and useful project information.

Come and join the Flock
Yarn ChickHen began because we wanted to share the things we enjoy making, learning and laughing about β and somewhere along the way the people watching became part of it too.
That is why we call everyone the Flock.
So whether you have been knitting for forty years, started crocheting yesterday, collect yarn faster than you can use it, or are simply here to watch Mr T attempt another beginner project, pull up a chair.
You are welcome.
You can watch Yarn ChickHen on YouTube, explore the rest of the website, or join the email list from the homepage so you do not miss what hatches next.
Welcome to Yarn ChickHen.
